This is a feat that will do any township proud and inspire many more small town boys and girls to dream big.
For several years running, Neyveli, the mining-power hub in Cuddalore district, has had scores of students from the Jawahar Higher Secondary School gaining admission into IITs/NITs across the country.
This year, the launchpad for a promising career has been laid with 51 students from the Jawahar Higher Secondary School, CBSE, topping the State of Tamil Nadu in the IIT JEE (Main)-2015 Examination.
The JEE Main-2015 examination this year was conducted online on April 4 attracting approximately 15 lakh students.
The successful students from Neyveli will be among the 1.50 lakh candidates who get to have a crack at the All India level IIT Joint Entrance Examination (advanced)-2015 seeking admission in the Indian Institutes of Technology as well as the premier technical education institutes.
The advanced level examination is scheduled for May 24.
Felicitating the successful students from Neyveli at a special function, B. Surender Mohan, chairman and managing director, NLC, highlighted the fact that the ratio of three out of every four students who appeared qualifying in the IIT-JEE Mains examination was the highest ratio from any single school in Tamil Nadu.
In all, 68 students from the school appeared for the examination and 51 students qualified---according to the break up, 14 out of 20 girls and 37 out of 48 boys qualified.
According to an NLC official, Neyveli which until about 10 years ago saw at best two or three of its sons make it to top-notch IITs, is now an academic hotspot in producing candidates to prestigious S&T institutions.
Since 2007, about 284 students have gained admission into various IITs/NITs among 355 students who had a shot at the entrance examination. For the academic year 2013-14, 38 out of 59 students, or two out of three students got IIT admission, which was highest ratio among any school of Tamil Nadu, he said.
With an intention to improve the opportunities for the students studying at Neyveli to enter into the institutions like IITs,NITs, the Neyveli Telugu Samithi Educational Academy, in coordination with Jawahar Education Society, has been conducting coaching classes for the IIT aspirants.
With support from the State-owned mining magnate, the school authorities have been providing additional intensive crash course coaching programme to achieve the best possible results in the forthcoming JEE Advanced examination. Eminent experts from other centres are also being brought for the coaching sessions.
